Blog Comment Rules

Due to some blog post comments getting out of control, I am hereby immediately implementing these three rules in regards to comments...

1. Anonymous posting will be tolerated only if you're absolutely generic in what you're saying. If anyone truly wishes to offer constructive criticism or to start a dialogue, rather than insult me or emotionally manipulate me, blog post comments are not the place to do it. I hate to sound like a Psych professor, but learning takes place with give-and-take conversations. Making your retort and walking away is cowardly, and blogs are not usually intended to be conversations.

2. Do not invoke God's name or religion in general for any reason, positive or negative, unless you are DIRECTLY responding to something in a post. My blog has upset enough people that I don't want to bring religion into it, and it's too complicated of a topic to deal with in blog posts. You want to talk about God? Write to me. E-mail, AIM, whatever. You really want to have a theological discussion? I would WELCOME it. I've gotten more religious in Summer 2010, and I would enjoy an occasional mature theological discussion. But not on the blog's comments sections.

3. But signing your name, even a name that has some meaning beyond a little anonymous cowardly name, will make me infinitely far more lenient. This is an issue of control and order. I don't want some idiot posting a comment about how Islam is the one truth faith and then every Christian turning a blog post comment conversation into a message board from hell. I will greatly police anyone else who tries to invoke God's name and, if you're not brave enough to sign your name to the message, I'm going to delete it. If you do sign your name and it's not inflammatory, then I'll probably keep it.

The three rules can be summed up thusly: if you're going to be an asshole and give a one-off comment that is probably offensive, feel free to remain anonymous and don't complain when I wipe it from my blog, because if you don't care enough to defend yourself, then I don't care enough to listen to you. If you are brave enough to stand by your words rather than hiding behind a pseudonym that can be attributed to literally anyone with computer access, then I'll give you the same respect to a point. But ultimately, for any extended conversation, don't use the blog; use a different medium.
